During this test, a controlled tasting agent such as Bitrex® or saccharin is introduced while the participant wears the respirator under a testing hood. If the participant cannot detect the agent while completing the required exercises, the respirator has passed the qualitative fit test.
The test is specific to the exact respirator model and size used during the appointment. Passing with one N95 does not mean every N95 will fit the same way.

What Happens During Your Fit Testing Appointment?
Your appointment includes more than simply putting on a mask. The tester will guide you through the process and document the result for the specific respirator tested.
- Brief screening and explanation: The tester reviews the process and confirms that you can detect the testing agent.
- Respirator selection and inspection: The required mask is identified and checked before use.
- Proper donning and seal check: You are shown how to put on the respirator, position the straps and complete a user seal check.
- Qualitative fit test: While wearing the testing hood, you complete a series of breathing, talking, head-movement and body-movement exercises.
- Pass or fail result: The tester records the result for the exact make, model and size tested.
- Documentation: After a successful test, you receive a fit-test record for your employer, school or clinical program.
If a respirator does not fit correctly, a different available model or size may provide a better seal.
Before Your Mask Fit Test
Please follow these instructions carefully so your test can be completed as scheduled:
- Arrive clean-shaven wherever the respirator touches your face. Beards, stubble and long sideburns that cross the sealing surface interfere with the fit and can prevent testing.
- Avoid eating, drinking anything other than water, chewing gum, smoking or vaping for at least 15 to 30 minutes before your appointment.
- Bring the exact respirator required by your employer or school if it has been supplied to you.
- Bring any glasses or other personal protective equipment that you will normally wear with the respirator.
- Bring photo identification and any employer or school forms that must be completed.
- Confirm in advance whether your organization accepts qualitative fit testing.
Fit testing does not replace any medical assessment, hazard assessment or respiratory protection program required by your employer.
